Oculoplastics is a specialised field of ophthalmology focused on conditions affecting the eyelids, tear ducts, orbit (eye socket), and surrounding facial structures.
Ectropion (turning out of the eyelid) is the most common lower eyelid malposition and can cause tearing, irritation and dryness. Surgery involves tightening the eyelid and sometimes also eye retractor muscles.
Entropion (turning in of the eyelid) is the term used to describe rolling inward of the eyelid. It is important to have an entropion fixed before permanent damage to the eye occurs.
Upper eyelid ptosis (pronounced “toe-sis”) refers to drooping of the eyelid. Most cases of ptosis can be corrected surgically, usually by tightening the major eyelid muscle.
Excess and loose skin of the upper eyelid can sag and sometimes interfere with your field of vision. This can be corrected by blepharoplasty surgery.
A blockage of the tear duct can cause continuous watery eyes, mucous reflux and in some cases, acute bacterial infection. DCR is an operation to form a new tear drain between the eye and nose. It allows tears to drain by bypassing the blocked nasolacrimal duct.
There are several types of skin cancer that can develop around the eyelid region, including at the lid margin. Surgical excision with clear margins and reconstruction remains the gold standard of treatment.
