What is REJURAN®?

REJURAN® is a sterile injectable gel containing sodium polynucleotide, purified from salmon DNA. It is manufactured by PharmaResearch Co Ltd in South Korea and supplied in Australia by K Bridge Medical Pty Ltd.

It is a Class III medical device included on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods. It is not a medicine and does not add volume. REJURAN® i is a version designed for the delicate skin under the eyes.

How it works

The gel is injected into the dermis, the deeper layer of the skin, as many small injections across the treatment area.

Polynucleotides are thought to support the skin's own repair processes. Any change develops gradually over several weeks, rather than straight after treatment.

Results vary between people. Some people notice little change, and no particular result can be guaranteed.

REJURAN® i for the skin under the eyes

The skin of the lower eyelid is among the thinnest on the body. It has little support beneath it and moves with every blink, so fine lines often show here first.

REJURAN® i is a version of REJURAN® designed for this area. It contains the same type of polynucleotide, in a more fluid form that spreads evenly through thin skin. It is placed in small amounts in the skin itself, not in the deeper tissues around the eye.

What it may help with

  • Fine lines under the eyes
  • Thin skin with uneven texture

What it is not designed to treat

  • Eye bags caused by fat pushing forward beneath the skin
  • Hollows or loss of volume under the eyes
  • Dark circles caused by pigment or visible blood vessels

Cross-section through the eye and lower eyelid, approximately to scale.

Treatment by an ophthalmologist

Dr Cheryl Au is an ophthalmologist: a medical doctor with specialist training in the eye and the structures around it, including the eyelids. For treatment close to the eye, that training means:

  • Detailed knowledge of eyelid anatomy
An understanding of the thin skin, muscle and other structures of the lower eyelid where treatment is placed.

  • A realistic assessment
Dr Au can explain what is causing the changes under your eyes, and whether this treatment is likely to help or whether something else is involved.

  • Follow-up by the same doctor
If you have any concerns after treatment, including eye irritation or swelling, you are reviewed by the doctor who treated you.

  • An eye review if needed.
If it is indicated, Dr Au can include an ophthalmic (eye) review in addition to your medical aesthetic consultation. This checks your eyes and eyelids for conditions such as dry eye, eyelid inflammation or a loose lower lid that may affect whether treatment suits you. Any cost for the eye review is explained when you book.

Is it suitable for me?

Dr Au will assess you in person before any treatment, including your medical history, medicines, allergies, previous cosmetic treatments and what you hope to achieve.

Treatment only goes ahead if it is appropriate for you. This treatment is only available to adults aged 18 and over.

It may not be suitable if you:

  • are allergic to fish, salmon or trout, or to polynucleotides
  • are pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding
  • have an infection, cold sore or inflammation in the area
  • have a permanent filler or implant in the area
  • have an autoimmune condition, a bleeding disorder or take blood thinners (this needs assessment)

What happens on the day

1

Assessment

Your practitioner examines the area you are concerned about and reviews your medical history, medicines, allergies and any previous cosmetic treatments.

2

Your goals

You talk about what you would like to change and why, and what outcome is realistic for you.

3

Your options

Your practitioner explains the options that may suit you, including no treatment, with the benefits, risks, recovery and likely number of sessions for each.

4

Your plan and costs

If treatment is appropriate, you receive a personalised plan with the costs in writing. You are welcome to take time to think it over before giving consent.

Treatment Course

Because any improvement builds gradually, a course of sessions is usually recommended. Dr Au will recommend a plan that suits you; you can stop at any point. Changes in skin quality usually develop over several weeks to 3 months. Results are temporary, because the skin continues to age.

Recovery and aftercare

Plan for visible bumps and redness for 1–2 days, and possibly bruising for up to 2 weeks. Many people return to usual activities soon after, but some prefer to allow a day or two before work or social events.

  • Avoid make-up, active skincare, saunas, hot baths and strenuous exercise for 24 hours.
  • Use SPF 50+ sunscreen daily and avoid sun exposure.
  • Do not pick at scabs, flaking or bumps.
  • Avoid other facial treatments for 2 weeks.

Risks and side effects

All injectable treatments carry risks. Most side effects are mild and settle within days, but serious complications can occur. Your risks will be discussed in full at your consultation.

  • Common
Bumps, redness, swelling and tenderness at injection points; bruising; dryness, flaking or peeling for several days

  • Less common
Prolonged swelling or lumps; temporary skin darkening, especially with sun exposure; acne-like breakout or flare of a skin condition; less improvement than hoped

  • Rare
Infection, which may rarely lead to scarring; cold sore reactivation; allergic reaction, including very rarely anaphylaxis; granuloma or inflammatory nodules, particularly near previous filler; very rarely, injection into a blood vessel, which may damage the skin
